Founding Story

How it all started.

2019

GM, a full-time Uber driver in High Wycombe, gets deactivated after a false passenger complaint, with no warning, no explanation, and no path to appeal.

2020

A small Facebook group of 200 drivers becomes the foundation — sharing appeal scripts, legal contacts, and hard-won knowledge

2022

Uber Drivers Union officially launches with a legal advisory team, a drivers’ rights handbook, and a formal deactivation appeal process.

2026

14,200+ members across across England, Wales & Scotland. Over £2M in disputed earnings recovered. The fight continues.

We exist because drivers deserved better.

The private hire industry in the UK has undergone a seismic shift in the past decade. Platforms that once promised flexible, fair income for drivers have increasingly used algorithmic management, opaque policies, and one-sided contracts to extract maximum value while transferring maximum risk to the people doing the actual work.

The 2021 Supreme Court ruling in Uber BV v Aslam was a turning point — it confirmed what many drivers already knew. But knowing your rights and being able to exercise them are two very different things. That gap is why Uber Driver Union exists.

Uber Drivers Union are not a trade union in the traditional sense — we are a support platform, an advocacy service, and a knowledge resource. We connect UK drivers with the information, tools, and people they need to protect their income and assert their rights.

Our Independence

We are independent and not affiliated with Uber, Bolt, TfL, or any platform operator, nor are we connected to any political party. Our services are sustained through membership fees and support from organisations that advocate for workers’ rights within the UK gig economy.

Our Values

What we
stand for.

These aren’t words on a wall. They’re the decisions we make every day, about who we serve, how we operate, and what we’ll never compromise on.

01

Drivers First Always.

Every decision we make runs through one filter: does this help the driver? Not the platform. Not our partners. Not optics. The driver. If the answer is no, we don’t do it.

02

Radical Transparency

We tell drivers exactly what we know, including when the odds aren’t good, when a case is weak, and when a platform’s policy is technically legal even if it’s wrong.

03

Solidarity Over Competition

We don’t compete with other driver advocacy groups. We share resources, tactics, and wins. When drivers win anywhere, we all win. The platform has billions. We have each other.

04

Long-Term Change

We fight individual cases and systemic battles simultaneously. Winning one appeal is good. Changing the policies that cause unjust deactivations is better. We’re building toward both.
